This artwork consists of two postcards that together tell a story of Taiwan’s marine environment through the symbolic crystal globe. The globe represents the underwater world, a fragile ecosystem trapped within a transparent sphere that both protects and confines it.
In the first postcard, the globe reveals a troubling reality: a polluted marine environment where vibrant life struggles to survive amid toxic threats. Inside the globe, fish swim through murky, grey-blue waters laced with chemical contamination. Their colors fade, scales dull, and eyes clouded, expressing the toxic impact on marine health. Abundant human-made wastes—metal cans, plastic bottles, and fishing nets—float and settle within coral reefs, choking fragile habitats. A sea turtle, emblematic of marine creatures, is agonizingly entangled in fishing nets and suffocating plastic rings, its face a painful reminder of the consequences of industrial growth and poor waste management.
Outside the globe, the coastal landscape mirrors this crisis—with factories releasing smoke and discharging chemical waste into dark, polluted rivers flowing into the sea. Trash litters the shoreline, contrasting sharply with patches of green plants fighting against degradation.
The second postcard offers hope. The globe now houses a thriving marine sanctuary with colorful coral reefs and joyful, healthy fish and turtles. Outside, clean beaches and flourishing nature depict a sustainable future fueled by thoughtful conservation and responsible human action.
Together, the postcards are an invitation to reflect on the duality of crisis and renewal, urging awareness and action to safeguard Taiwan’s precious marine ecosystems.
創作動機
The motivation behind this artwork stems from the urgent global and local need to protect marine ecosystems, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14 (SDG 14) – Life Below Water – and Taiwan’s TCE 6 – Environmental Protection. Oceans are integral to life on Earth, providing vital resources, regulating climate, and supporting biodiversity. However, increasing pollution, overfishing, and habitat destruction threaten these ecosystems, especially in coastal regions like Taiwan.
SDG 14 emphasizes conserving and sustainably using oceans, seas, and marine resources to ensure healthy and productive marine environments for future generations. It calls for reducing marine pollution, restoring degraded ecosystems, regulating fishing practices, and expanding protected areas. Taiwan’s TCE 6 also focuses on protecting natural resources and the environment through sustainable development policies and community engagement.
This artwork visualizes the dual reality faced by Taiwan’s marine environment. The crystal globe symbolizes the underwater ecosystem, a delicate balance disrupted by industrial pollution, plastic waste, and harmful human activities. By portraying the stark contrast between a polluted underwater world and a hopeful vision of rejuvenation, the postcards aim to raise awareness and inspire collective responsibility.
Through art, this project seeks to communicate the critical importance of protecting marine life, encouraging viewers to reflect on their impact and support sustainable actions. It emphasizes that safeguarding marine ecosystems is not only an environmental issue but essential for social well-being and economic resilience. The work advocates for stronger implementation of SDG 14 and TCE 6 goals to ensure Taiwan’s coastal waters remain vibrant, thriving habitats.
心得與反思
Creating this artwork has been a profound journey of understanding the fragile balance within our marine ecosystems. The crystal globe symbolizes an underwater world that is both beautiful and vulnerable, capturing the duality between environmental degradation and hope. Through this project, I realized the urgent realities behind SDG 14 – Life Below Water – which calls for the protection and sustainable use of oceans and marine resources.
The process of illustrating pollution’s devastating effects alongside a brighter vision of renewal deepened my appreciation for environmental conservation and the intricate relationship between human actions and nature. It became clear how critical TCE 6 – Environmental Protection – is in Taiwan’s context, where industrial growth and waste management must harmonize with ecological preservation.
Reflecting on this artwork, I see the power of visual storytelling to evoke empathy and awareness. The disturbing image within the globe emphasizes the consequences we are currently facing, while the hopeful portrayal outside inspires action and responsibility. I learned that highlighting contrasts can create a stronger emotional impact and communicate complex issues more effectively.
This project has motivated me to think critically about how sustainable practices can be integrated into daily life and industry, encouraging collaboration between communities, governments, and individuals. Ultimately, this work is not just about depicting an environmental crisis but about fostering a deeper commitment to protect our oceans for future generations.
