This combined illustration showcases two contrasting yet interconnected narratives about human interaction with marine ecosystems, highlighting the dual paths of destruction and preservation. The first image depicts the devastating impact of industrialization and urbanization on marine environments. A cracked jar leaking black liquid flows toward a trash-covered beach, symbolizing the consequences of unchecked pollution. In the background, the smoke from factory chimneys under a foreboding sunset reflects humanity’s relentless exploitation of resources. Struggling marine life and coral reefs trapped within the jar illustrate the degradation of marine ecosystems. The presence of Taipei 101 as a distant observer symbolizes economic progress achieved at immense ecological costs, while a hand reaching toward the jar represents humanity’s greed and control over nature, even as the environment collapses.
The second image provides a hopeful contrast, presenting Taiwan’s vision for sustainable coastal governance. Taipei 101, now bathed in golden light, serves as a beacon of resilience and progress. 創作動機
This vibrant 4×6 illustration highlights Taiwan’s vision for sustainable coastal governance, showcasing the harmonious coexistence of nature and human activity. Inspired by the 1987 United Nations report Our Common Future, which defines sustainable development as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs,” the artwork captures Taiwan’s ongoing efforts to address the overexploitation of marine resources and the strain on its environmental carrying capacity. It reflects the nation’s determination to balance ecological preservation with economic growth.
The illustration aims to spark reflection on humanity’s responsibility to protect natural resources. By contrasting environmental degradation with a hopeful vision of sustainability, it encourages viewers to recognize the impact of their actions and to support practices that promote balance and harmony between progress and nature.
