作品英文描述

This series contrasts the urgent need for marine conservation with the hopeful possibility of restoration, using the traditional Tatala boat from Taiwan’s Tao indigenous culture as a central symbol.
In the first piece, a Tatala boat drifts in polluted coastal waters, surrounded by plastic waste and struggling coral reefs. Indigenous people aboard the boat look around in concern, symbolizing the devastating impact of human activity on marine ecosystems. The scene highlights the critical need to address plastic pollution and protect the ocean’s fragile ecosystems.
The second artwork presents a more optimistic vision, with the same boat gliding over clear waters, thriving coral reefs, and abundant marine life. Here, the indigenous people observe a vibrant, healthy ocean, reflecting the harmony between human culture and nature. This piece envisions the ideal future where marine ecosystems are restored and preserved through sustainable practices.
Together, these artworks explore the urgent call for ocean conservation and the potential for recovery, emphasizing the vital role of indigenous knowledge in safeguarding the environment. They inspire hope for a future where cultural traditions and environmental protection coexist in balance.

創作動機

The motivation behind these works is to use the symbolism of the indigenous boat as a metaphor for the need to navigate the ocean toward a future of environmental restoration. By juxtaposing the polluted waters with the thriving, healthy seas, I aim to provoke thought about the urgency of preserving marine ecosystems while honoring the wisdom of indigenous cultures that have long coexisted with the natural world. The Tao people’s deep connection to the sea and their traditional ecological knowledge are central to this vision, serving as both a warning and a guide for future action.

心得與反思

Reflecting on the creation of this series, I am reminded of the delicate balance between cultural heritage and environmental stewardship. The contrast between the polluted and pristine oceans underscores the importance of maintaining this balance. Indigenous knowledge has always played a crucial role in sustainable living, and this series emphasizes the need to integrate such wisdom into modern conservation efforts. My hope is that these artworks will inspire viewers to take action in protecting the oceans and preserving the cultures that have long upheld the values of sustainability and respect for nature. Through this reflection, I am more committed to advocating for environmental preservation and fostering a deeper understanding of how traditional practices can inform our efforts to heal the planet.
