This diptych presents a powerful narrative on the reconciliation of cultural heritage and environmental urgency. The first image captures a suffocating reality where tradition struggles against urban decay. A “soot-blackened stone lion,” gasping for air amidst “metal cage windows,” serves as a poignant metaphor for the collateral damage of unregulated cultural practices (TCE 1) and industrial pollution. A smog-choked Taipei 101 looms in the background, symbolizing the oppressive weight of unsustainable urbanization (SDG 11), creating an apocalyptic atmosphere that urgently calls for Climate Action (SDG 13).
In stark contrast, the second image envisions a “Solarpunk” utopia where technology revitalizes tradition. The same lion now rests in a pristine, vertical forest city, bathed in golden light. “Holographic incense” replaces toxic smoke, illustrating how Innovation (TCE 8) can preserve the spirit of rituals without environmental cost. With a crystal-clear Taipei 101 standing amidst wind turbines, this scene exemplifies the harmonious coexistence of Historical Preservation (TCE 7) and green governance.

This thought-provoking diptych highlights Taiwan’s critical challenge: reconciling the spiritual sanctity of Traditional Festivals (TCE 1) with the urgent need for Climate Action (SDG 13). Inspired by the principle of “Cultural Sustainability,” which asserts that heritage preservation must evolve to align with ecological health, the artwork captures the tension between unregulated urban practices and the carrying capacity of our environment. It reflects the nation’s determination to modernize its traditions without losing its soul.
The illustration aims to spark a paradigm shift in how we view ritual and respect. By contrasting the suffocating reality of a “soot-blackened stone lion” against a “Solarpunk” vision of “holographic incense” (TCE 8), it challenges the binary belief that we must choose between faith and clean air. It encourages viewers to recognize that true reverence lies not in the volume of smoke produced, but in our responsibility to protect the land and air for future generations, ensuring a Sustainable City (SDG 11) where history and nature thrive together.
