作品英文描述
The first image portrays the sea west of Taichung, a critical habitat for the endangered Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin, grappling with the detrimental effects of human activities. The artwork uses a stark contrast between a cloudy sky and murky waters to underscore the severity of ocean pollution. A central focus is a large Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin, creatively depicted by waste materials, such as plastic bags and disposable tableware, to symbolize the devastating impact of pollution on marine life.
Beneath the waves, bleached coral reefs, including the delicate Acropora cervicornis, illustrate the consequences of rising sea temperatures and pollution. Once vibrant ecosystems now appear lifeless, emphasizing the urgent need for conservation. Above the water, a cargo ship illegally dumps waste, highlighting how unchecked human behavior exacerbates the problem.
In contrast, the second image portrays an ideal scenario where individuals actively engage in beach clean-up efforts, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in protecting the environment. It highlights the beauty of a pristine ocean, symbolized by a thriving coral reef and a joyful dolphin, serving as a vision of what can be achieved through collective action.
創作動機
The motivation behind creating these images stems from a deep concern for environmental conservation, particularly the threats facing marine ecosystems. The goal is to awaken viewers to the interconnectedness between human actions and nature while inspiring them to take meaningful action to reduce environmental degradation. Marine pollution, especially from plastic waste, has become a global crisis that endangers marine life and, indirectly, humanity’s future. These images aim to evoke emotional resonance and emphasize the urgency of protecting our planet.
We hope that viewers, when confronted with the stark contrast between these visuals, will reflect on their behaviors and question whether our convenience comes at the cost of nature. The work also seeks to convey a message of empowerment—that through small, tangible actions, such as reducing plastic usage and participating in community clean-up initiatives, everyone has the power to contribute to a healthier planet. Beyond criticism of the current state, these images represent hope—a reminder that the ocean’s beauty and vitality can be restored if we choose to change. Ultimately, the goal is to foster a sense of responsibility and inspire positive action for environmental preservation.
心得與反思
Creating this artwork has been an eye-opening journey, deepening our understanding of the interconnectedness between human behavior and the marine environment. While researching for the piece, we were struck by the alarming rate at which marine ecosystems, such as coral reefs and the Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin population, are declining. It became clear that small, everyday actions—like improper waste disposal—have far-reaching consequences.
The process of designing the image allowed us to explore the emotional power of art as a tool for environmental advocacy. Depicting the dolphin as a mosaic of waste materials was particularly impactful, as it vividly illustrates how human negligence directly harms marine life. It also reminded us that art has the potential to transcend language barriers, making complex issues accessible to a wider audience.
Reflecting on this experience, we are more committed than ever to promoting sustainability in our own life and encouraging others to do the same. While the problems facing our oceans are vast, we believe that collective action, inspired by education and awareness, can make a difference.
